Education In Japan
by Tam

Education in Japan A typical Japanese classroom at the High School Youth Hokubu in Oita Prefecture. Education has always been an important issue for Japanese society. There are three ways in which a child is educated in Japan for attending a public school for compulsory education, by attending a private school for compulsory education or by attending a private school that does not adhere to standards set by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) or Monbukagakusho. Although not compulsory, 90 of the population attends secondary school. More than 2.5 million students continue to study in universities and tertiary colleges. In the past, the selection process for high-level education was described as “hellish” or “war”. However, with the shrinking number of births in Japan, the situation is reversed. Currently, colleges and universities must compete to win students.
